How does massage actually work?

We all know how good a massage feels, especially if you’ve had one after exhausting yourself from running, training or simply from a back-to back busy schedule. You notice almost immediately how much more relaxed and rejuvenated you feel as well as how much better your muscles work. So how does massage actually work?


When massage is applied to the muscles, it causes physiological changes in your body through:

  • The Mechanical Response - physical effects that occur in the body when pressure is applied to the soft tissues 

  • The Reflectory/Relaxation Response - an involuntary, yet predictable response of the nervous system to massage techniques and touch
