Trying to encapsulate the last 7 days of silence on this meditation retreat is incredibly difficult but hopefully these snapshots give you a glimpse into the beauty and power of the stillness and tranquility we sat in.

This was my 4th time returning to Monchique for the retreat and 6th meditation retreat in total and after

having not been on one for 3 years I was apprehensive to say the least. From the early 5:30am starts, to sitting meditating for over 40 hours in a week, daily yin yoga and the most nourishing vegan food, it’s safe to say my body was given the care of slowing down and just ‘being’ that it really needed and craved.

Many people say; ‘I couldn’t be silent for a week’ but actually when you are surrounded by the beautify of the mountains and slower pace of life it actually becomes second nature to adapt and join in. Another question I often get asked is ‘what do you gain from it?’ But actually it’s more what do you shed and cleanse yourself of by being in silence and sitting with your breath for a week that is actually the most powerful. The coming home to yourself. We search far and wide for our next distraction, to keep up with the hectic daily schedules, denying our bodies of rest and stillness to achieve the next goal, expectation or productivity we’ve set ourselves when actually sometimes what we need most is to do nothing, expect nothing and sit with discomfort.

I genuinely, despite a lot of discomfort feel a deep sense of peace after this retreat and I am so proud of myself for showing up with an open mind with no ultimate goal.

I highly recommend attending a silent retreat at least once in your lifetime, silence really is powerful especially in a world which is so loud and speaking becomes impulsive to fill the gaps. If you want to know more I’d be so happy to share with any of you!
